In the wake of recent telecommunications deregulation, the
Internet Supply market in Costa Rica is still in its relative
infancy. Under the yoke of the national telecommunications
firm, RACSA, a division of its telephony and electricity behemoth,
ICE, Internet supply and service suffered dramatically in Costa Rica
compared to the rapid advances and widespread connectivity that was
achieved in other nations with free market principles in effect.
But with deregulation a wealth of options are becoming increasingly
available and increasingly less expensive.
For the most remote homeowners with no option of a broadband DSL,
wireless, or cable connection as might be available in metropolitan
San Jose and other urban areas, satellite Internet is always an
option. Monthly 128 kb satellite service is around $200 per
month, varying from company to company, and typically requires a
$3000 outlay in first time equipment and installation costs.
