Air conditioning is an energy intensive household operation.
The power required varies according to the size of the compressor. A 12000
BTU window unit may use 2500 watts. A two tone central air conditioning
unit more like 5500 watts. The amount of time an AC unit stays on varies
according to the temperature setting and how well the space being cooled is
insulated. If we assume a unit is on eight hours a day for a two ton unit,
that 1320 kilowatt-hour monthly power demand requires thirty 224-watt solar
panels to operate and four inverters to generate the amperage required to
operate the unit. This is equivalent to nearly $50,000 in panels and
inverters just to operate a two-ton central air conditioning unit.
